Apart from the implementation of the Food Safety Management System, in accordance with HACCP principles and the applicable European and national legislation for the sector, the programme also includes protocols for the Prevention and Control of Legionnaires' Disease, in accordance with the recommendations of the Portuguese Directorate-General of Health (DGS), namely the publication "Prevention of Legionnaires’ Disease in Accommodation Establishments" – June 2007, the Sectoral Commission 04 for Water publication "Prevention and Control of Legionella in Water Systems" (2018), and the Good Practice Manual published by ARS-LVT in May 2011. These protocols also consider the principles established by Law no. 52/2018 of 20 August, which defines the legal framework for the prevention and control of Legionnaires’ disease and the procedures related to the use and maintenance of water systems susceptible to the proliferation and dissemination of Legionella in public and private buildings and establishments.
With regard to Water intended for Human Consumption, the applicable legal framework in Portugal is currently defined by Decree-Law no. 69/2023 of 21 August, which establishes the legal regime for drinking water quality and transposes Directive (EU) 2020/2184 into national legislation.
Protocols for Pools & Jacuzzis, in accordance with the recommendations of the Portuguese Directorate-General of Health, are also included, incorporating preventive measures against pathogens such as Cryptosporidium, as well as in-situ analyses of Swimming Pool Water and Water intended for Human Consumption during each audit. Protocols and procedures regarding Norovirus, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), are also included in the programme.
